The author claims that the use of teaching assistants represents a most progressive trend that should further be emphasized, both in classroom teaching and in course components that take place outside the classroom. The category of teaching assistant is defined, and variation among teaching assistants and various aspects of their use are given attention. Teaching assistants should act under the guidance and supervision of qualified teachers. Suitable forms of training of both teaching assistants and the teachers who make use of them should be developed.
